CBD Drinks vs. Kombucha – Which Wellness Trend Wins?

February 19, 2025

The wellness beverage aisle has become a battleground of trends, where every bottle seems to promise calm, balance, or vitality. Two of the biggest players right now are CBD-infused drinks and kombucha. Both are marketed as healthier alternatives to sodas or energy drinks, yet they appeal to different lifestyles and health goals. So, which one deserves a spot in your fridge?

CBD Drinks: Calm in a Can?

CBD drinks are part of the booming hemp industry, offering a way to consume cannabidiol without smoking or vaping. You’ll find sparkling waters, teas, coffees, and even mocktails infused with CBD.

Supporters claim that sipping CBD can ease stress, help with sleep, and reduce inflammation. Early studies suggest potential benefits, but most evidence is still limited. The Cleveland Clinic notes that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which may regulate mood and pain responses.

That said, regulation is spotty. Labels don’t always match what’s inside, and some beverages may include more (or less) CBD than advertised. Costs are also higher, thanks to processing and novelty demand. If you want to try CBD drinks, it’s smart to look for third-party lab testing and clear labeling.

Kombucha: Bubbly Gut Support

Kombucha has been around far longer, with roots in ancient China. It’s a tangy, slightly fizzy tea fermented with a culture of yeast and bacteria. The drink is best known for its probiotic potential, as well as organic acids and antioxidants carried over from tea.

Fans love kombucha for supporting digestion and for being a fun, flavorful alternative to sugary sodas. Brands have taken off with creative options:

  • GT’s SYNERGY – one of the pioneers of kombucha.
  • Health-Ade – popular for approachable flavors and small-batch brewing.
  • Brew Dr. – known for organic teas and unique blends.
  • Humm Kombucha – family-owned, offering both traditional and zero-sugar versions.
  • Better Booch – a craft kombucha with bold flavor combinations.

Still, kombucha isn’t perfect. Some bottles contain added sugar, and its acidity can be rough on sensitive stomachs. There’s also a trace alcohol factor, as fermentation naturally produces small amounts (though most commercial products stay under 0.5% ABV).

Head-to-Head

  • Science & Evidence: Kombucha has a longer track record, though its benefits are often overstated. CBD is more cutting-edge, but research hasn’t fully caught up.
  • Taste Factor: Kombucha is tangy, sour, and slightly sweet. CBD drinks usually taste like sparkling water or tea with subtle herbal notes.
  • Risks: Kombucha risks are minor (sugar, acidity), while CBD raises bigger questions about labeling, dosage, and interactions with medications.
  • Price & Accessibility: Kombucha is easy to find at grocery stores and often cheaper. CBD drinks are pricier and not as widely available.

Which One Wins?

It depends on your goals. For digestive support and a proven history, kombucha is the safer bet. If you’re curious about stress relief and relaxation, CBD drinks could be worth a try—just do your homework on quality and dosing.

Many wellness fans enjoy both: kombucha as a daily pick-me-up, CBD as an occasional calm-down ritual. In the end, the “winner” may be less about the drink itself and more about choosing what aligns with your body, your lifestyle, and your budget.
